It calms me down right away. So quiet and respectable, nothing bad could ever happen to you there ..." Holly Golightly told her companion in the classic Audrey Hepburn film "Breakfast at Tiffany's. Fairmont is far from the lights and noise of New York City, but one little shop at 72 Downtown Plaza is clearly inspired by the quintessence of retail elegance: Tiffany & Co. Blue Box Bridal will open 5-11 p.m. Friday during the downtown Holiday Delights for a sneak peak at the merchandise and newly renovated building. The store will officially open Dec. 8. "Karla came up with the name," said Michelle Morris, referring to her business partner at Blue Box Bridal. "The inspiration was Tiffany's blue box." "We kept the Tiffany's theme in mind, thinking of "Breakfast at Tiffany's," said Boettcher. "We tried for upscale." The businesswomen began planning their joint venture this summer, starting renovations on the space in October. "We've done all the work ourselves, us and our poor husbands and friends," Boettcher said. "... It's been a fun transformation." Both women are venturing into the business world after working as registered nurses at the hospital in Fairmont. A mutual friend brought the two together after hearing each of them express similar business interests. "My job was ending, and I thinking, 'What could I do that would be fun and fill a need in Fairmont?'" Morris said. She has always been interested in fashion and weddings. "It's just an exciting time in your life," she said. "Also it's fun to work with brides and their families and help with planning that special event." For Boettcher, volunteering at state-level beauty pageants stirred up her interest in formal gowns. So with the enthusiasm of newlyweds, the pair excitedly launched themselves down a new path - the world of fashion. In October, they went to their first bridal market in Chicago. "It was a learning experience for sure," Boettcher said, laughing. "We'd never seen so many white gowns." The trip was the best and hardest part of their newly chosen careers. "Think about how hard it is to pick out one dress for that special day," Boettcher said. Then imagine picking out 100 dresses for other people. "We wanted a wide variety," Morris said. And a wide variety of prices, Boettcher added. The cost of a bridal gown from their shop ranges from $200 to $1,250, with most falling somewhere in the middle. The lines carried at Blue Box Bridal include DaVinci, Impression, Mori Lee, Forever Yours, Dere Kiang (detachable skirts make this one Boettcher's favorite), Venus, Alfred Angelo and Cara Mia, an exclusive line available only in store. The shop also will sell bridesmaid dresses, mother of the bride dresses, proms dresses, flower girl dresses, cocktail dresses and the ever important LBD - little black dress. Veils, tiaras, jewelry and shoes - "shoes!" Boettcher said. Blue Box Bridal also will rent out tuxedoes and wedding supplies, and they're offering their services as wedding planners. "We want to be that one-stop shop," Morris said.
