Mobile holds the longest running tradition of Mardi Gras in the United States, starting in 1703. This year, the tradition continues offering over two dozen parades. These fabulous parades are typically followed with a ball hosted by the same organization that sponsors the parade. There are also many organizations that give a ball but don't parade, making the number of balls for the season substantial. These extravagant Mardi Gras balls are open to those individuals over 21 who receive an invitation from the respective organization. If you have received an invitation to one or several Mardi Gras balls and are wondering what to wear, the staff at Francia's Formal Affair on Airport Boulevard has the details on Mardi Gras fashion etiquette and this season's top-selling styles. The manager of Francia's, David Francia, explained that any formal event hosted after 7 p.m. is considered an "ultra formal" occasion. According to employee Britney Wiggins, such an event calls for very particular protocol. Wiggins explained that men are required to wear tux jackets with tails; however, the type of lapel is at the discretion of the wearer. Men should also wear an all white pique, which consists of a white shirt, vest, bowtie, studs and cuff links. Wiggins said that Francia's will be sending out about 300 tuxes every day for the next two weeks. So, guys, now is the time to rent a tux if you have received an invitation to a ball. For the ladies, as with the men, the sooner you get started the better luck you'll have. Women, on the other hand, have a dress code that's a little less stringent; they are only required to wear a floor length ball gown. According to Wiggins, the popular colors this year tend to be lighter shades such as various blues like turquoise. Dresses made of taffeta seem to be selling well this year, as well as satin. Strapless dresses also seem to be popular choices. Girls, just remember it must be floor length, and light colors are especially in vogue. One last tip - girls, please, no nylon gloves.
